Phonetics (First part)

Vamos a ver algunas normas básicas para la pronunciación del español estándar.

Here you can find some basic pronunciation rules of standard Spanish.

VOCALES / VOWELS

En español hay cinco vocales:

In Spanish there are five vowels:

A [a]

E [e]

I [i]

O [o]

U [u]: No se pronuncia cuando va detrás de Q.

            We don’t pronounce U after Q.

CONSONANTES / CONSONANTS

1. En español no se distingue entre B y V. Estas dos letras se pronuncian [b].

In Spanish, B and V are pronounced in the same way: [b].

2. La letra C se pronuncia de dos formas diferentes:

C is pronounced in two different ways:

-          C + A, O, U, se pronuncia [k].

-          C + A, O, U, is pronounced [k].

-          C + E, I, se pronuncia [θ].

-          C + E, I, is pronounced [θ].

3. La Z se pronuncia siempre [θ]. Pero sólo va seguida de A, O, U. (Hay algunas excepciones como “zénit”, pero son muy escasas).

Z is always pronounced like [θ]. But it can be written only before A, O, U. (There are some exceptions, like “zénit”, but they are very few).

 

ZA, CE, CI, ZO, ZU

 4. La letra Q siempre se pronuncia [k], pero:

-          Va seguida de una U que no se pronuncia.

-          Sólo existen QUE [ke] y QUI [ki]. (QUA, QUO, QUU).

Q is always pronounced as [k], but:

-          We never pronounce the U after Q.

-          There are only QUE and QUI. (QUA, QUO, QUU).

5. La letra K siempre se pronuncia [k]. Esta letra se utiliza en muy pocas palabras en español.

K is always pronounced like [k]. There are few words in Spanish with K.

6. La letra G se pronuncia de dos formas diferentes:

G is pronounced in two different ways:

-          Se pronuncia [g] en los siguientes casos: GA, GUE [ge], GUI [gi], GO, GU

-          It is pronounced [g] in the following cases: GA, GUE [ge], GUI [gi], GO, GU

o       GÜE se pronucia [gue]; GÜI se pronuncia [gui]

o       GÜE is pronounced [gue]; GÜI is pronounced [gui]

-          Se pronuncia [x] en los siguientes casos: GE, GI

-          It is pronounced like [x] in the following cases: GE, GI

La letra J siempre se pronuncia [x] y puede ir seguida por cualquier vocal: JA, JE, JI, JO, JU.

J is always pronounced [x], and it can go with any vowel: JA, JE, JI, JO, JU.

Así pues, GE y JE se pronuncian igual: [xe]; también GI y JI se pronuncian igual: [xi]

So, GE and JE are pronounced in the same way: [xe]; GI and JI are also pronounced in the same way: [xi]

[g]: GA, GUE, GUI, GO, GU, GÜE, GÜI

[x]: JA, JE, GE, JI, GI, JO, JU
